Understanding Syndemics.

A syndemic occurs when two or more diseases or health conditions happen in the same population and area due to social and structural factors. Syndemics worsen existing health concerns in communities and create greater health disparities in the population. These are the ingredients for a syndemic:

Two (or more) diseases or health conditions cluster and interact within a population.

Social and structural factors allow for those diseases and health conditions to cluster.

The clustering of health conditions facilitates biologic, social, and behavioral transmission, which creates an excess disease burden and sustains systemic health disparities.

The syndemic we are addressing in Eastern Nebraska is between HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), viral hepatitis, and substance use disorder. These conditions don’t exist in a vacuum from each other! Each of them can make people more susceptible to the others, and in some cases, can make the others worse too. Health is complicated. Fortunately, improving community conditions doesn’t have to be. Getting tested for these diseases and finding treatment helps you to take control of your health and improve the health of our community. Know your status and get tested today!

We Win Together.

HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis C thrive when we try to hide them. Poverty, stigma, and limited access to care create an environment where STIs spread with ease. Douglas County Health Department, Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, Sarpy/Cass Health Department, and Three Rivers Public Health Department have come together to fight for Nebraska citizens in the fight against STIs.
